Pamela Toutant is a trusted college essay tutor who works one-on-one with students and offers college essay writing workshops.  Award-winning widely published essayist, journalist, and writing teacher Pamela Toutant is available to help your student craft and polish a winning college admissions essayPamela works one-on-one with students and occasionally offers group classes. 

For undergraduate admissions, the summer before the senior year of high school is the ideal time to draft college essays and supplements.  Take the stress out of the college application process by getting a head start. 

Pamela also assists students throughout the year with the writing requirements for graduate school, law school, business school and medical school.

Pamela is a personal essayist, feature writer, and seasoned college admissions essay tutor. Her work has appeared in Salon, Huffington Post, Redbook, Ms., The Washington Post Magazine, Washingtonian, Applause, Overture, and Bethesda Magazine, among others. She was selected as a 2004 finalist for the Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction Award, was a 2006 Pushcart Prize nominee, and is a three-time Virginia Center for the Creative Arts fellow.

2021 Spring Creative Writing Class:  Memoir, Personal Essay and Fiction

Eight sessions: Tuesdays April 6- May 25 - 7:00-9:00  
Location: Pamela's home in Chevy Chase

Class description: This class is designed for writers who are working on, or who would like to work on, fiction or creative non-fiction (memoir, personal essay, or a compilation of essays). It is an opportunity to gain feedback from Pamela and other writers in a stimulating and supportive environment.
 
Pamela has taught numerous creative writing classes, coaches individual writers, and tutors high school seniors on their college essays.  Her own work has appeared in Salon, Ms. Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, The Washingtonian, literary magazines, Bethesda Magazine, and most recently The Music Center at Strathmore's, Applause Magazine. Pamela was a 2006 Pushcart Prize nominee and recipient of three Virginia Center for the Creative Arts fellowships.  She is currently working on several essays and a novel.

Write Sparkling Prose

Four sessions: Saturdays June 5, 12, 19 and 26 10:00-12:30

Whether you are a writer of fiction, memoir or personal essay, this class will give you the tools to make your prose sparkle and draw-in readers beginning with the first sentence.  Participants will learn the creative use of sensory detail, metaphor, word choice, and pacing, which will be discussed and applied through in-class exercises and short assignments. As inspiration, we will use excerpts from works by Vladimir Nabokov, Jennifer Egan, Akhil Sharma, Joan Didion and David Sedaris. Participants will also have an opportunity to receive feedback on the first five pages of a novel, memoir or essay.
